It’s a common belief that obesity is solely a result of excess body fat. However, recent studies have suggested a different perspective. They indicate that the real culprit may not be obesity itself, but rather a condition called “sarcopenia,” which refers to the loss of muscle mass as we age.
Here’s the idea in a nutshell: when we lose muscle, our bodies burn calories less effectively, leading to weight gain, often labeled as obesity. So, instead of just focusing on losing weight, we should also work on preserving and building muscle.
So, what’s the takeaway from these findings? It’s not just about shedding pounds; it’s about building and preserving muscle too. Resistance training, balanced nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle can be essential in combating both obesity and sarcopenia.
